Marinas in Cape Verde
Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) is a republic located on an archipelago just over 800 miles off the western African Coast. The once uninhabited islands were discovered by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century and colonized. The country is named after Cap Vert (meaning Green Cape) in Senegal, which is the western most point of continental Africa. Cape Verde became an important watering station, then sugar cane plantation site, and later a major hub for the trans-atlantic slave trade.
The archipelago is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 smaller islets. Of these, only Santa Luzia and five islets are uninhabited. All the islands are volcanic, but an active volcano only exists on one of the islands, Fogo. The largest island is Santiago where the capital Praia is located.
The Barlavento islands are made up of Santo Antao, Sao Vincente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista.
The Sotavento islands are made up of Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava
In recent years tourism to Cape verde has increased dramatically with direct flights from Portugal and other European Airports to the International airport on Ilha do Sal,and the islands are being dubbed the African Caribbean because of the white beaches and all year round summer temperatures.
Cape Verde Islands use UT-1 throughout the year.
