Ocean Village Marina Gibraltar, Gibraltar

Gibraltar's Ocean Village Marina is fast-gathering a reputation for the rising star in the super-yacht arena and is now competing with the most established marinas across the Mediterranean. A secure and sheltered haven from the storms (and taxes!) that affect many Iberian marinas.

The location of Ocean Village Marina at the Gateway to the Mediterranean is also significant as Ocean Village has become a key re-provisioning and fuel stop for not only trans-Atlantic yachts but also Mediterranean charters. Ocean Village itself is more than just a marina - it's been created as a home port of choice - and the vibrant marina quayside is a popular place for a stroll of an evening. The marina has berths from 8m to 100m and on a mix of traditional med, moorings, alongside berths and floating pontoons.

The Approach

When approaching Gibraltar during the day the towering Rock can be seen for miles, though when approaching from the north and west it only fully opens after rounding Punta Carnero. The bay is wide and holds few hazards on approach but there are numerous wrecks from various eras if considering anchoring. These wrecks are popular as dive site so it is important to keep a keen eye out for the International Code Flag “A” and then give the dive boat a wide clearance.

The bay can produce sudden wind shifts and gusts especially during a levanter and it may be necessary to shorten sail quickly. Commercial and naval traffic makes the approach very busy and yachts must give way to both. There is always a lot of anchored commercial vessels just off the harbour with bunker barges, water taxis etc plying between ships and the port.

By night the two main lights to be first spotted are the red aero light on top of the rock flashing Morse GB and the Europa point light. Identifying lights when closing the marinas is difficult with the backdrop of the town’s lights.
