Playa Blanca Marina Canary Islands, Lanzarote

The appeal of Playa Blanca has diminished slightly since the advent of Marina Rubicon which is just a mile or so across the bay. Because of all the facilities that Marina Rubicon can offer Playa Blanca has reverted primarily back to a commercial port for the Fuerteventura ferries, tourist boats and the local fishing fleet. Tourism still plays an important part to the local economy and there are plenty of cafes and bars. A new 7km promenade has been created from Playa Blanca towards Punta Papagayo.

Communications are excellent both between the islands and the rest of Europe. The Islands main airport is just 30 minutes away by car and all the islands are connected by ferries from the major ports. The road infrastructure is good and well maintained as is the public transport system which is clean, safe and efficient. Two regular ferries from Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, that operate to nearby Fuerteventura which is just a 30 minute journey and inexpensive. Ferry operators Fred Olsen and Armas

Fresh, frozen and canned provisions are available from the well stocked supermarket and the local shops. Larger supermarkets can be found in Puerto del Carmen and there is a hypermarket near Lanzarote airport. As with the other islands, here is a great opportunity to replenish bonded goods because of the generous tax laws. The same tax laws also means that refuelling is a lot cheaper than in many Northern European countries. There are also several banks with cash dispensing machines close to the harbour.

Medical needs are met by several clinics, with the main hospital being in the capital Arrecife. There are bars and restaurants to choose from, many being located close to the marina area or in the 5 star hotel. Yacht charter can be found in Puerto Calero or Rubicon and chartering a yacht to sail around Lanzarote is a popular holiday.

Anchorage

There is no room for anchoring in the harbour or close to the entrance. But sheltered anchorage can be found a little to the east.

The Approach

The Harbour lies about 2.5M northwest of Punta Papagayo across the bay from Marina Rubicon. The most distinctive landmark is the tall lighthouse on Punta Pechiguera about 3M to the west. There are no known hazards, but keep a lookout for larger vessel entering and leaving the harbour including the two Fuerteventura ferries.

The Entrance

The entrance is straightforward but the harbour is crowdedespecially when the ferries are manouvering. A row of yellow floats mark the swimming area of the beach. Since the completion of Marina Rubicon berths are now solely reserved for locals boats but space may be found if no passenger ships are anchored off where their launches land.

Formalities

At the moment it would appear that visiting yachts can report to the Boatyard, telephone number 928 517 473 for berth prices and availability
