The city has been a busy maritime centre since the Knights of St John in 1530 and as you would expect is steeped in history and culture.
Bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shops are to be found just a short walk away in the town of Vittoriosa or visitors can try the famous Casino di Venezia. The island also offers plenty of shoreside activities for crew and guests including an18 hole golf course and diving as well as theme parks and events.
There are regular ferry services to Salerno, Genoa and Tunisia and a high speed ferry to Sicily. The international airport is only a 15 minute drive away and has connections to most European cities.
The Approach
As you approach Valletta the large sprawling city is easy to identify and as you close, the St. Elmo’s lighthouse on the eastern end of the breakwater is also easy to identify. The harbour is very busy and because of the volume of commercial traffic yachts should contact Valletta Port Control on channel 12 when twelve miles out. As you approach the entrance commercial traffic has priority. VPC will usually ask you to call again about 1 NM off the breakwater.
Contact Grand Harbour Marina on VHF channel 13 for berthing instructions.
The Entrance
As you enter the harbour leave St Elmo lighthouse on the eastern end of the breakwater to starboard, and the short breakwater below Fort Ricasoli to port. Round Fort St Angelo to port and enter the approach channel to the marina which is marked with small red and green buoys. As you approach the berths call the marina on channel 13 to ask for berthing instructions.
Formalities
Yachts arriving from other ports in the EU provide vessel registration details and a crewlist on a form provided by the marina office and the delivered to the Customs office.
Yachts arriving fom outside the EU will have to clear through customs and immigration and usually undergo a yacht inspection.
All yachts need to provide proof of third party insurance.
If any passengers or crew will be leaving the yacht in Malta and departing the island by another means, they will need to have their passport stamped by Immigration on arrival.
All visitors to Grand Harbour Marina will need to fill in a Berthing Licence at the Capitainerie.
The marina is owned and run by Camper and Nicolson.
