Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, its southern border is with England and it is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh is the country's capital and second largest city and is one of Europe's largest financial centre, the largest city is Glasgow. The currency is Sterling (£).
Communication is good with a motorway system linking to England and beyond to the continent and a railway network that links the major cities to each other and with England. There are five main Scottish airport of Glasgow International, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow Prestwick and Inverness. Regular ferry services operate to the Scottish islands as well as to Ireland, Belgium, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
The Alantic coast is wild and rugged but there are many estuaries and lochs offering sheltered sailing. The Outer Hebrides and Ireland are a relatively short hop away. The east coast can be challenging also with North Sea gales but there are good marinas offering excellent shelter.The north coast is famous for its fast flowing tides and it is just a short distance (6 miles) over to Orkney. There are also inland lochs with marinas and the Caledonian canal offers a short cut between the east and west coast.
Scotland has a long history and lots of famous traditions making it a fabulous place to visit, you have to try the whisky, you may want to listen to the bagpipes you might find you want to stay longer
