Marina San Miguel Canary Islands, Tenerife
Work started on San Miguel marina in the early 90's along with several golf courses and a large residential and tourist area. However during the construction of the breakwater work was delayed several times when gales caused damage. The breakwater is now complete and substantially reinforced, with facilities slowly starting to move into the marina. When we visited Tenerife and the marina in April 2008 three pontoons were in place in the northern end of the port and a long pontoon ran the length of the inside of the breakwater. (At this time there was about 50 craft using the marina). The eventual plan is for 345 berths for vessels up to 20m.
Within a short walk there are numerous bars and restaurants, several supermarkets and shops, plus telephones and cash dispensers. There are already quite a few hotels but the area is destined to be developed a lot more in the coming years and so as the area grows so presumably will the marina facilities. Most other facilities can be found in the commercial port of Los Cristianos or the tourist town of Playa de las America a short drive away.
Road communication is good and well maintained with TF1 motorway just a few km distant. Buses are fairly frequent and connect Reina Sofia airport, Santa Cruz and the rest of the island in an anticlockwise direction. Car hire is available in the town or from the airport which is about 6 km away.
The island has many yacht charter companies and chartering a boat is a popular holiday, charters can be arranged from the marina.
Anchorage
There is no room inside the harbour to anchor
The Approach
There are few hazards on approaching this new harbour and marina but work is still in progress and so Navigation marks can be altered and temporary marks established as work continues. The short inshore breakwater is now complete and marked by a red beacon with a light. Keep a good look out for the departing "yellow submarine" which is low in the water and difficult to spot from seaward
The Entrance
On rounding the seaward breakwater keep to starboard as depths inshore shallow in places and rocky outcrops break the surface. At the time of writing there is line of yellow floats marking the limit a yacht may close the shore. Only two of the planned eight marina pontoons are in place plus one pontoon running along the length of the seaward breakwater. The reception berth and fuel berth are immediately to starboard upon entering the harbour, temporarily moor here and visit the harbour office in the tower for berthing instructions
Formalities
The usual vessels papers should be submitted at the harbour office and because the marina is so new space will almost always be found, and berth costs are reported as low. Telephone 922 601 482 for avalability and berth rates.
