Puerto de San Juan Canary Islands, Tenerife
Puerto de San Juan is a small working fishing harbour sheltered behind a very large breakwater which makes an interesting daytime port to visit in settled weather. In the late 1990's a plan for the extension of the harbour by building a new breakwater was drawn up. This would have created a port for both commercial vessels and yachts but marina par of the scheme seems to be still on the drawing board. A lot of the anchorage is now taken up with moorings.
The village has supermarkets and shops to provide provisions and locally caught fish can be found. There are several cafes and bars many that specialise in fresh fish.
The harbour is easily recognisable from the huge breakwater that lies to the south of the village. It is 5M south of Los Gigantes and 8M from Playa de las Americas. Enter the harbour from the southeast keeping between the breakwater and the moored fishing boats. It may be possible to lie alongside the inner side of the breakwater in 4m for a short time but permission must be obtained from the port office. With even a low swell though, surge is a problem making good fendering important. In bad weather and southerly swells the harbour can become dangerous.
Two marine farms have been established to the southeast of the harbour with their positions centred on 28° 07?.2N 16° 47?.2W and 28° 09?.1N 16° 48?.3W. The southernmost is marked by 4 pillar buoys with X topmarks, Fl.Y.5s3M, the other closer to the harbour has 4 pillar buoys with X topmarks, Fl(4)Y.11s3M.
